The Gallery - Old

The theme for this week's Gallery is:  Old.

Below is a picture of Ann Green's grave, who died at the rather impressive age of 106 years old.

The picture was taken whilst documenting grave stones at All Saints Churchyard, Bisham Berkshire for my cemetery blog, Beneath Thy Feet.

"In Memory of Ann Green for many years the faithful housekeeper at Temple House who departed this life the 4th February 1862 Aged 106 years."

  1. Wow that is some achievement for that day and age. Makes you wonder if she a) lied about her birth date or b) they couldn't count!

Love your take on the theme :)

    1. Thank you. I have to say I often wonder that myself. It is probable that she wouldn't have known her exact date of birth as births, marriages and deaths weren't formally recorded until 1837

  3. That is a seriously grand age even in this modern world let alone all the way back then. I love cemeteries, if you bother to read they are stuffed full of amazing snippets of history.

    1. That is very true and the reason I started my cemetery blog.

  4. I imagine that was particularly rare in those days. My Great Grandmother lived until almost 102. I am hoping I have her genes! :D

    1. 102 is equally impressive. I'm not sure I'd want to live that long though.

  7. Wow, what a fabulous age! That would be amazing by today's standards, but must have been unheard of in those days!

  12. I quite like walking through cemeteries and finding the really old headstones, especially the ones that you can hardly read because then you know they are really old. Bit morbid on my part I guess but I find it really interesting to work out how old people were. They give you an idea about the family too.
